On the last day of 2020, the island of São Miguel, the most populated of the Azores, received the first doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine in the region. They were prepared at the largest hospital of the archipelago, the Divino Espírito Santo Hospital, in Ponta Delgada, where the Regional Secretary of Health gave a press conference. After, the vaccines were taken to a retirement home for the elderly in Vila Franca do Campo, where nurse Marina Tavares became the first person to be vaccinated in the Azores.
